Zhao Wei is a Chinese film actress and pop singer. Audiences sometimes refer to her by her English name, Vicki Zhao. She is considered one of the “Four Young Dan actresses” in China (四小花旦), along with Xu Jinglei, Zhang Ziyi and Zhou Xun. After being chosen to work as an extra on a filming set, Zhao developed a passion for acting. While studying at Beijing Film Academy, Zhao participated in various film projects. Zhao’s breakout role as a leading actress was in Princess Pearl, a television series. In 1999, after Princess Pearl was broadcast, Zhao also began a singing career with her first album, Swallow. After her breakthrough, Zhao has been involved in numerous controversies about her personal and professional lives, including posing in a dress resembling a Japanese war flag. Throughout her career, Zhao has engaged herself in more varied roles, such as Lu Yiping in Romance in the Rain, a policewoman named An Xin in Jade Goddess of Mercy, the playful Qu Ran in A Time to Love, and the gentle, intelligent Yao Mulan Moment in Peking. She has also remained active in her music, recording several albums since her debut in 1999. Her music career is highlighted by her wins in the Channel V’s 12th Chinese Music Billboard Event in 2006. Zhao won awards for Most Popular Female Artist and Most Popular Music Video for her music video “Shangguan Yan and I.” Zhao was also awarded MTV Asia’s Favourite Artist from Mainland China. Zhao’s newest television series is titled Thank You for Having Loved Me. For her role in the series, Zhao received a salary of 100,000 RMB per episode. After three months of filming during the summer in Shanghai, the series was completed in September 2006. It is scheduled to be broadcast possibly by the end of 2006. In 2007, it was also announced that Zhao had been cast as Sun Shangxiang in John Woo’s latest blockbuster, Battle of Red Cliff. In early 2008 Zhao was cast to play the role of Pei Rong of in Chen Jiagang’s film Painted Skin; in early 2009 she was cast to play the main role of Hua Mulan in Jingle Ma’s film Mulan.

Xu Jinglei is an actress and director most famous in mainland China. Xu graduated from the Beijing Film Academy’s prestigious Performance Institute in 1997. Along with Zhao Wei, Zhou Xun, and Zhang Ziyi, the mainland Chinese media considers her a member of the Four Young Dan actresses (Chinese: 四小花旦). Although not well known outside of China, she is popular domestically: in mid 2006, her Chinese language blog had the most incoming links of any blog in any language on the Internet, according to Technorati. Gao Yuanyuan is a Chinese actress and model. Gao Yuanyuan entered the entertainment industry in 1996. Known for her fresh looks and chaste spirit, Gao, unlike other mainland Chinese actress, did not graduate from any drama academic institutions. Rather she started her stardom by acting in a TV commerial for Meadow Gold ice-cream after being spotted off the street at Beijing’s Wang Fu Jing Shopping District. She appeared as a minor role in the 1997 movie comedy Aiqing Mala Tang, (Spicy Love Soup), directed by Zhang Yang. While in 2000, she starred in an advertisement for Qing Zhui (fresh mouth) chewing gum during the CCTV’s broadcast of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and is thus known to viewers as Qing Zhui Nu Hai’er (”fresh mouth girl”). In 2002, she played the leading role of Zhuo Zhiruo in Yi Tian Tu Long Ji (The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre), a drama based on the same-titled novel by the acclaimed wuxia writer, Jinyong (Louis Cha). Increasingly well known in Asia, Gao has also made inroads into the international market. In 2005, she was on the red carpet at the 58th Cannes Film Festival, where her film Qing Hong (Shanghai Dreams), directed by Wang Xiaoshuai, won the Prix de Jury prize. Jackie Chan has described her as “having the freshest look and chaste spirit that no Hong Kong actress could approach”. Chan also picked Gao up as his partner in the action movie comedy Rob-B-Hood. Gao is also selected in 2008 to be a torch bearer in the Nanjing city, Jiangsu province leg of the torch relay for the Beijing Olympic Games on 27th of May, 2008.
